If all of space could fit in a shoebox, then how big would the world be? And how big would I be?

Scale plays an important role in my work. My main sources of inspiration are the heavenly bodies; how we experience them and the connections between them. Like the Sun, Moon and Earth: the moon orbiting Earth and Earth and Moon together in turn orbiting the Sun. They influence one another and together keep the system balanced.

I read about astronomy, study the heavens with my telescope and take photos of the sun and moon. To me photography is a way to collect images and I am mainly interested in analogue and lensless photography. The manual process involved with these techniques pleases me.  Working by hand means feeling the materials and building an intimate relation with them.

I prefer working with paper and fabric, foldable and soft materials that are easily worked by hand and share a tactile, haptic, quality. I create tapestries, artist books, collages and, occasionally a performance.

Sun and moon diary

We seem to take the sun and the moon, which accompany us on a daily basis, for granted. Some years ago I started to take pictures of these companions. This made clear to me that they have many faces and ways of presenting themselves to us.

This autumn there will be a follow-up of the sun and moon diary: as of October I will spend three months at Villa Waldberta in Bavaria. There I will research the life and work of the German – British astronomer Caroline Herschel (1750 – 1848).  And I will draw a line between her life and work and my photographs of the sun and moon.

The Solargraphy project

How can we visualize time? My preference for lensless and alternative photography has led me to solargraphy: with hand-made pinhole cameras the suns’ orbit is captured on photographic paper. Time is registered and made visible as a stacking of lines of light. It’s almost like observing the immense from the tiny pinhole. The sunlight burns itself onto the sensitive photopaper and the movement of the sun across the sky appears as bright lines. I started making solargraphs with homemade pinhole cameras in 2020.

In the meantime I have produced a great amount of images. Some of which I have turned into prints. But I found the images lack materiality so I started looking for something different. I expected to find that in translating them into large weavings. Together with the Textiellab of the Textielmuseum in Tilburg I have researched how to translate these images into tapestries in which the scenic qualities of the images are much more present.
